When you think about a relaxing massage, suction cups probably don`t come to mind, but there is a unique form of massage that can be used as a healing tool.

Massage cupping is a modified version of the cupping technique used in traditional Chinese medicine. It has similarities to acupuncture in that they both target sites on the body to initiate a feeling of relaxation, and also to respond to a number of medical conditions.

When it comes to equipment used during a massage, oils and hot stones might come to mind before suction cups. However, this technique is said to be just as relaxing.

During a typical massage, movements are used to push skin and muscles down and away, but massage cupping does the opposite of that.

"Massage cupping uses suction from the cups to create like a negative effect from massage, where it kind of pulls up and out. It helps to just kind of release extra fluid in the body and toxins and help your body rid of it naturally through the lymphatic system," said cupping massage practitioner Amy Hendrickson.

Different cup sizes are used to stimulate parts of the body and larger surface areas. Larger cups are used on the back and legs, and there are small cups which can be used on the face to reduce wrinkling and treat TMJ pain.

"It helps to aid in circulation, which massage is very good at, and it can help to break up tension and that kind of stuff as well, which people associate massage to be with," said Hendrickson.

While cupping massage can be used as a complementary therapy to treat conditions like fibromyalgia and arthritis, it is most effective in targeting stressed, tense areas of the body.

"To me it felt the best in my shoulders and through the top of my back, but that`s where I always am needing massaging and where I`m most tight in my muscles in the top of my back," said Andrea Birst.
